fter 6 years in their first home, Cui Mei & JR have decided to “go big”, but couldn’t bear leaving their township so they will be moving to the adjacent building. Stay tuned on how they setup their new 4 bedroom condo.
Joey is evolving from a witty boy to a mischievous rouge, who knows how to get what he wants, leveraging on his two most endearing qualities: quickness to smile and uncanny ability to charm anyone he meets. His #1 trick is to give you the quirkiest smile and pose to distract you from the fact that he did not done what was asked of him.
Meanwhile, Sawyer is becoming a little lady, starting first grade in Singapore this week, complete with smart watch for buying her lunch, tracking her steps and letting her parents spy on how much she spends. She continues to dance like an enchanted ice princess, loves swimming. Cycling is next up!
The siblings continue their love-hate relationship - they are roommates and can disturb each other into the wee hours of the night. Joey is starting to outweigh Sawyer, which doesn't bode well for the elder sister.
JR heads up business excellence for Singapore’s first members only wine club while still helping his past clients and thoroughly enjoys the challenges that the work brings. Look out for the opening of the club in Feb 2022! Cui Mei continues her work in the cruise team within Singapore Tourism Board. This growing industry is keeping her busy, with much to learn and always on the lookout for good cruises for the next Hickman holiday!
The family is perpetually on lookout for the next fun activity. 2022 goals include more family cooking time, watching cartoons, continue helping grandpa Joe mess up his kitchen drawers and finding time to go on a short holiday.
Joe has been grounded by COVID. His last business trip was January 2020. He hopes the business comes back this year. Joe still enjoys working on the website, spends way too much time on social media (SingaporeJoe is his handle on the major sites), he continues using his camera to capture memorable sights and happenings where ever life takes him.
This coming May will mark the 35th year that Joe has lived in Asia. Three and half decades ago Joe dragged his family halfway round the world to Malaysia on what was supposed to be a 2-year contract to open the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur... 2 years turned to 4, 4 to 8 to 16 years and so on. Asia has been home for more than three and a half decades. Malaysia, Philippines, Hong Kong &, for the past 25 years, Singapore. Joe, JR, Cui Mei, Sawyer and Joey still live in Singapore, while Alexis, Adam and Margot live & work in Fremont, California.
Joe purchased a second home in La Quinta, California. The home is located in Rancho La Quinta Country Club, twenty miles east of Palm Springs, California. A great place, on a golf course, with incredible views of the Santa Rosa Mountains. It is great for holidays and he is thinking it will eventually be a great place to retire. The only concern is that summers in the desert are now more humid than Singapore!
The purpose of this website is to give you a glimpse at what's going on in their lives; important events, simple moments and times they simply laugh at themselves. Here they share their stories, photos, adventures and experiences when traveling the world.

Alexis & Adam
Drs. Adam and Alexis Bateman are in their 6th year of living in Fremont, California with their two children, Margot (7) & Clark (3).
The Batemans keep busy! Margot started 1st grade in 2021 and has quickly become a monkey-bar master and wants to be on America ninja warrior someday. She also enjoys reading and math, and has been a true competitor playing card games of all kinds with Mom and Dad. Clark continues with his Montessori school, is a pro on his balance bike, and is quickly becoming a lego expert to rival his sister and father. Adam continues to work as a product engineer for Lam Research, creating new technologies in a fast paced field. In 2021, he worked his way up to a promotion to a more senior engineering position at the company. After 9 years at MIT, Alexis started a new role at Amazon on the Worldwide Sustainability Team. She has been enjoying the new challenge and the opportunity to make a broader impact on the world we live in. She has made a few quick trips to Seattle to see HQ and meet a few teammates, but mainly working remotely from our Fremont home base. She has still been serving as a visiting lecturer for MIT when the opportunities arise.
In 2021, The Batemans went on a number of road trips all over California including Santa Barbara, Legoland in Carlsbad, Gilroy Gardens, and La Quinta to reunite with the full Hickman family after almost 2 years. And were fortunate enough to start 2022 with a trip to Kauai, Hawaii for a much needed break of pool, beach, sand, and sun. They are thankful for staying, safe, happy, and healthy in 2021 and look forward to what 2022 brings them.
